So, he has popped the “BIG” question and you said “YES!”

Planning your fairytale wedding day can be daunting. Choosing a dress, the flowers, makeup and hair, the cake, venue and menu can be overwhelming.
Now you also have to book the right photographer for your wedding on top of it all!

Relax! I am here to help you understand what you should be looking for in a professional wedding photographer. I will start by telling you a little about my work.

I have years of experience photographing weddings both big and small, in the UK countryside and around London. I’ve worked with many wonderful couples, creating beautiful fine art wedding images that can be treasured forever.

I’ve worked in some of England’s most elite wedding venues, from grand stately homes to smaller more intimate venues.

In order to give you my full dedication, I only accept a limited number of weddings each year. I believe you should both feel comfortable and confident when you step in front of my lens. I have spent over a decade improving my technical knowledge and experience and I know you want to be sure that your wedding photography is be taken care of.  I keep things informal, yet professional. My relaxed, unobtrusive approach will put you instantly at ease and allow you to be your true, uninhibited self on a day that demands honesty and authenticity.

Here are some of the wedding venues I’ve been lucky enough capture weddings at:

Barnsley House – Gloucestershire | Hedsor House – Buckinghamshire | Stoke Place – Buckinghamshire | Micklefield Hall – Buckinghamshire | St Mary Le Bow – London | Eastwell Manor – Kent

Being quite a particular bride and not having any experience with the two of us having taken many pictures together, Carlien was a pleasure to work with. Our photoshoot together was so much fun and felt incredibly natural. When we received the photos we were just delighted and went on to use them for our save the date cards that were sent out to all our guests. People who received these shared our sentiment in that our photo captured the essence of who we were as a couple. I would highly recommend Carlien and would consider her instantly in the event of needing a professional photographer in the future.

Below are answers to some of the questions I’m frequently asked by prospective clients. Click below to find the answers!

You're based in Essex, but do you travel?

Absolutely, I’ve captured weddings across the country and I’m more than happy to travel anywhere for stories of love. My prices include travel to your venue within mainland UK, but if you’re getting married over 60 miles from me (CO4), then I’ll book in at a local B&B. This avoids any stress (yours and mine!) of racing down busy motorways and getting stuck in traffic on the morning of your wedding. A small additional fee of £150 covers the two nights of accommodation.

What happens if you’re ill on the day?

Touch wood, this has never happened to me. But trust me, it would have to be something pretty serious to stop me being there on your big day (we’re talking a missing arm, struck by lightning, that sort of thing!). But I’m always prepared, and should I get caught by a bolt of lightning, I have a wide network of fabulous photographer friends who would be able to step in at the last minute. So you can relax knowing that we’d be able to find you someone with a similar style to me at short notice!

Do you edit your images?

Yes, all my images are lightly edited in my signature style to help them look their best and bring them together as a single collection of images that beautifully tell the story of your day. This isn’t to be confused with re-touching, and I don’t do cosmetic airbrushing to make people look skinny- I’m all about keeping it authentic.

Are you insured?

Yes, this is really important and most venues will require your suppliers to be covered. I have Public Liability Insurance up to £5 million, and Professional Indemnity Insurance to cover any eventuality.

We don’t really like having our photographs taken….

I hear you and I’m exactly same. This is why I don’t go in for the ‘say cheese’ photos – they only get you fake smiles that people cringe inwardly doing! Nothing beats the natural smiles that come from you just being yourselves, having a giggle together. It’s my job to help you feel at ease and enjoy the experience, and I do offer some light direction so that you don’t feel like a lemon standing there. I have a relaxed style so that we can just get to know each other as friends, with lots of my couples telling me that they forget I’m taking their picture after the first five minutes!

We’d like to meet you before we decide – can we?

Yes please, if you’re local then I’d love to meet you to discuss your photography and hear all about your plans for your big day. We can catch up over a cuppa face to face, or alternatively if time/distance is tricky, we can arrange a Skype call. Just drop me a line to get the ball rolling.

We love your work, how do we book you?

That’s great to hear! As I take on a limited amount of bookings each year and frequently book up over a year in advance, it’s a good idea to secure me for your date sooner rather than later. You can do this by paying the £500 deposit, completing a booking form, and signing our agreement- all of which can be done online. Once that’s done, I’m all yours for the big day! Your remaining balance is due 60 days before the date of your wedding.

What should we expect once we’ve booked?

Once you’ve secured me for your wedding date, I’ll be in touch every now and then to see how you’re getting on with the rest of your plans, and if you’re having a pre-wedding shoot, we can schedule that in. At around the time your balance is due, I’ll send you a wedding questionnaire, which will inform the day plan that I’ll put together for your wedding. We’ll then go through this during your consultation, which is usually done over Skype, or face to face if you’re local to Colchester.

What's your favourite kind of wedding to photograph?

It would be so hard for me to pick one particular ‘style’ of wedding to shoot, because for me it’s all about you and your uniqueness. That’s what makes it special, not just the way it’s been styled. I suppose my favourite kind of wedding is really one where the couple and guests are relaxed and just want to have an amazing day! That said, I am rather partial to a beautiful barn or marquee setting…!

What happens after the wedding?

Two weeks after your wedding, I’ll send you an exclusive digital preview of your day via email. You’ll then receive approximately 600 high-resolution digital images, all of which have full reproduction rights. I’ll beautifully edit your photographs by hand before presenting them in a private online gallery that can be share with friends and family.  All images can be easily downloaded to your computer.

For an additional fee, beautiful high quality prints can be ordered via this link if you wish.

Our session with Carlien was more than just having our pictures taken, it was an experience we won’t forget! Having never had professional pictures taken of ourselves, she was able to make us feel comfortable and relaxed, which translated to beautiful images. She captured moments as though she had known us forever, and we will always treasure them.

As well as capturing you as a couple at a very special time of your life, an engament shoot provides the perfect opportunity to for us to get to know each other and ease any potential feelings of anxiety you might have about being photographed on your wedding day. This will ensure you feel completely at ease in front of my camera on the wedding day.

This includes a one hour photo shoot. You will receive your beautifully edited images via a private online gallery that can be shared with friends and family. For an additional fee, professional quality prints can be ordered via this link if you wish.

When should we have our engagement shoot?

The engagement photo shoot can be done soon after you book your wedding photography or we can wait until your favourite season comes before your wedding.

What should we wear?

You can bring a change of clothing to change into halfway through the shoot. I would suggest something smart casual. Large patterns and big logos on t-shirts can be distracting so they aren’t the best choice, neither are trainers.

Please have a look at my Pinterest moodboard to help you get ideas.

Where will the session take place?

We can do your engagement shoot anywhere you feel comfortable. Whether it’s downtown, the lake, a park or a favourite spot of yours. I want the shoot to be a reflection of you and your love so I want you to be completely in your comfort zone.

*Travel surcharge will apply if location is further than 30 miles from CO4

How long will the session be?

A session will typically take 1 hour.

My husband and I were delighted with the stunning and amazing photos. Carlien is professional and a knowledgeable photographer. She made us feel at ease and the photos were natural rather than posed. We highly recommend Carlien
